	Jialin Yan (b. 1992) is a photographer and visual artist currently based in London. She graduated from Royal College of Art MA Photography in 2025. Her practice explores themes of memory, loss, and emotional inheritance—particularly the quiet processes through which personal and collective memories are abandoned or forgotten. Working across photography, sculpture, and installation, Yan seeks to reimagine memory as something tactile and spatial, constructing immersive environments that invite reflection and emotional resonance. Rooted in lived experience and often drawing from her identity and cultural background in Southern coastal city in China, her works weave together visual narratives that foreground overlooked or disappearing identities. By blending fictional storytelling with material experimentation, Yan creates spaces where forgotten histories can be felt, held, and momentarily retrieved.
Yan’s practice has received international recognition, being a finalist in the inaugural Female Documentary Photography Foundation Award in 2023 and shortlisted for the LensCulture Critics’ Choice Awards in 2022. She has also been invited as a guest lecturer at Tsinghua University and University for the Creative Arts. Her work has been featured in publications such as British Journal of Photography, FT Weekend, HUCK Magazine, and LIFE Magazine, and exhibited in major cities including New York, Rome, and Tokyo.
In addition to her photographic practice, Yan is a curator and writer, contributing articles to various publications. In 2020, she co-founded Miroir Project, a platform dedicated to supporting and promoting female photographers in China. She served as one of the curators for the “Local Action Unit” at the 2022 Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival and was the invited curator for the “REDNOTE present:Image and Imagination” special exhibition at the 2024 Shanghai Photo Fair .
Yan has collaborated with renowned brands and media, including CHANEL Foundation, Harper‘s BAZAAR, Numero China, superELLE, GLASS China, Visla Magazine, Adidas, Air Jordan, Tencent, BenQ, Rednote, Xiaomi, GIADA, Aranya etc.
严佳林（1992年生）是一位摄影师与视觉艺术家，现居伦敦。2025年她从皇家艺术学院摄影专业毕业。她的艺术实践围绕“记忆、失落与情感继承”等主题展开，尤其关注那些个人与集体记忆在不知不觉中被遗弃的静默过程。她的创作跨越摄影、雕塑与装置艺术，试图将记忆重新想象为可触摸、可感知的空间体验，构建出一个个能够引发观众情感共鸣与沉思的沉浸式场域。她的作品植根于个人经验，并常以其中国南方沿海身份与文化背景为线索，通过视觉叙事呈现那些被忽视或逐渐消失的身份与记忆。通过虚构叙事与材料实验的结合，严佳林营造出一种可以被“感受、触碰、片刻找回”的历史场域，使被遗忘的历史在空间中重新浮现。
她的作品入围2023年首届女性纪录摄影基金会评选，并曾进入2022年LensCulture评论家选择奖决选名单。此外，她受邀担任清华大学与英国创意艺术大学客座讲师。严佳林的作品曾被《英国摄影杂志》《英国金融时报周末版》《HUCK Magazine》《LIFE Magazine》等刊物刊登。她的作品亦在纽约、罗马、东京等地展出。
除摄影实践外，她也是一名策展人。2020年她联合创立“照镜子Miroir Project”，这一平台长期致力于推动中国女性摄影师的发展。2022年集美×阿尔勒国际摄影季“在地行动单元”策展人之一，2024年小红书上海影像博览会“影像与想象”专题展的特邀策展人。
她还与多个品牌和媒体合作，包括CHANEL香奈儿基金会、时尚芭莎、superELLE、《GLASS》中文版、阿那亚、Adidas、Air Jordan、腾讯视频、明基、小红书、小米手机、GIADA 等。

	In Echo of Enigmatic Nights is a cross-media installation rooted in a fictional narrative: a young Tanka woman, drawn by her curiosity about the distant mainland, secretly builds a canoe and sets out to sea. &#38;nbsp; But the journey transforms her—over time, she becomes the canoe itself.This poetic transformation serves as a metaphor for how women’s stories are often left to drift at the margins of recorded history. &#38;nbsp; The Tanka people, historically relegated to the sea and excluded from land-based governance, embody this liminal status—neither fully visible nor completely erased. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Growing up in Fuzhou, a southern coastal city of China, I often heard fragments about these women. &#38;nbsp;Their histories floated among silence, as if swallowed by the waves.Through this project, I seek to give shape to those fragments. &#38;nbsp;The ocean becomes a metaphor for both freedom and invisibility; &#38;nbsp; the boat, a vessel of survival and self-erasure. &#38;nbsp;The story does not present a linear revolution, but a quiet defiance—anchored in feminine intuition and longing. &#38;nbsp;It is not that the woman sails to reach a new land, but that she becomes the means of crossing for others, eventually turning into a boat that carries countless women across the water in search of voice and place.Enigmatic Night unfolds through fictional archives, sculptures, sound, text, and images. &#38;nbsp;These elements are not arranged to form a singular narrative but rather to evoke a submerged history—one that must be felt, pieced together, and imagined by the viewer. &#38;nbsp; It is a story not only of transformation, but of transmission: from sea to land, silence to speech, and from one woman to another.

&#38;nbsp; 展览“燃烧之路”委托工作

This series originates from my early experiences of moving from one city to another—a time marked by feelings of newness, unfamiliarity, and anxiety. &#38;nbsp;In one Eastern religious teaching, "spirit" is described as a fragment of emotion and consciousness, often hidden in the folds of physical space—the more folds, the more consciousness. &#38;nbsp;Spending prolonged time at home for work, I noticed how every corner seemed crowded with physical folds: stacked tables and chairs, layered clothes, utensils in disarray, books on shelves, and textiles draped over sofas and beds. &#38;nbsp;When I gaze at these spaces, “spirit” seems to emerge from its hidden folds.
In this series, I let go of my usual research-based approach and followed intuition to capture the strong presence of “spirit” that I felt. &#38;nbsp;I regarded the camera as a tool for cleansing, and the process of developing as a gentle purification. &#38;nbsp;Each time I revisited the emotions embedded in the space, they dissipated like smoke, elusive and transient.这个系列源自于我曾经从一个城市搬到另一个城市的初期，那是一个充满崭新、陌生和焦虑的精神体验。在一种东方宗教教义中，“灵”被描述为情感和意识的碎片，通常隐藏在物理空间的褶皱中——褶皱越多，意识越浓厚。由于工作原因，我长时间待在家中，注意到每个角落都堆满了物理上的“褶皱”：叠放的桌椅、堆积的衣物、杂乱的器具、架子上的书、沙发和床上的纺织品……当我凝视这些空间时，“灵”似乎从隐藏的褶皱中一一显现出来。

在这个系列中，我摒弃了以往基于研究的创作方法，追随直觉去捕捉我感知到的强烈“灵”感。我将相机视作我的清洁工具，显影的过程仿佛是一场温和的清洁，当我再次回溯到空间中的的浓烈情绪时，它即刻如烟尘般消散，褪去。

Where We Meet Again2025

This series explores the elusive feeling of reunion—not as a literal return, but as a tender attempt to reach toward the past through sensory fragments and emotional echoes. The works dwell in the space between memory and presence, where longing coexists with uncertainty. While drawn by the desire to reconnect with what once was, they remain gently skeptical: can we ever truly return, or do we only circle around the outlines of remembrance, suspended in something softer and more abstract?

	This video installation draws from a sensory memory rooted in my childhood bedroom in Fuzhou, where a large window faced a banyan tree. Every summer, the rhythmic hum of cicadas became a natural white noise—waking me, lulling me to sleep, and eventually embedding itself into my body and memory. After moving to London, fragments of that soundscape and the window’s quiet presence often return to me during emotional lows—as if the repetition of those fleeting moments could offer comfort, a soft way to hold myself together. Using a second-hand wooden window, curtain, summer plant footage, and a cicada soundscape, the piece creates a tender space of emotional circulation. It serves as both a personal pocket of stillness and a shared site for introspection, inviting viewers to dwell in a suspended moment of quiet resonance and soft healing.

	This beaded staircase is a fragile structure, inspired by the rainy seasons of my subtropical hometown. After storms, raindrops often cling to spiderwebs—delicate, glimmering connections that linger in my memory. Echoing those fleeting formations, this work imagines reunion as something tender and uncertain: a return not to a place, but to a feeling—transparent, suspended, like a dream just out of reach.

This project follows a group of young romantics who have chosen to escape the intensity of city life for Wanning, Hainan Province, a place known for its surfing culture and natural beauty.&#38;nbsp; Drawn by the promise of a simpler, nature-oriented lifestyle, many young people have come here to seek refuge from the pressures of urban existence.&#38;nbsp; During my time in Wanning, I documented both their daily lives and the surrounding landscapes, capturing the parallel reality they constructed as a sanctuary from modern society.


Wanning seems to offer a spiritual refuge, allowing these individuals to disconnect from societal demands and immerse themselves in the “oceanic feeling” Romain Rolland described— a freedom as boundless as the sea.&#38;nbsp; Here, they follow the natural rhythms of the sun, moon, and tides, crafting a lifestyle that leaves a deep imprint on their spirits, like seaweed clinging to their identities.&#38;nbsp; This environment shapes their personalities, seemingly as lasting and organic as dye soaking into cloth.


However, as I continued, I began to notice fissures within this seemingly perfect escape—a subtle fracture in the freedom they had found. &#38;nbsp;It made me question whether such an idealized retreat could truly shield them from the pervasive influence of modern life. &#38;nbsp;My images aim to capture both the beauty and the delicate fragility of this lifestyle, revealing the balance between seeking refuge and the quiet vulnerabilities that accompany any attempt at escape.

然而，随着时间的推移，我开始注意到这片理想化逃避中的“裂缝”——一种自由中的细微裂隙。这让我开始质疑，这样的理想化避难是否真能完全隔绝现代生活的广泛影响。我的影像试图捕捉这种生活方式的美丽和脆弱，展现出在寻求庇护与面对任何逃避中隐含的脆弱性之间微妙的平衡。

My uncle, grandfather and grandmother used to live together. Through my contact with them, I observed the collective vulnerability that emanated from them. All three died within a few years of each other. For various reasons, I did not see the three of them last. Intense regret and self-reproach have kept me from letting go of the pain caused by the death of my loved one for years.
It's a natural reaction to run away from pain, but maybe confronting it can help you move on. It wasn't until I started talking to my friends about three deaths that I realized that most of them, like me, were trying to escape their loss.
Maurice Maeterlinck mentioned a point of view about death in the Blue Bird: although some people have passed away, as long as someone still remembers him, he will still be as happy as before. So I began to think, treat relatives, should be remembered and remember, rather than forget. So I don't want to run away. After that, I began to visit the places where they were last seen, and talked more about them with my family members, looking for traces of their existence and capturing things that I had neglected. In the end, the traces and feelings of being retrieved became the fetters of all three of them. These fetters will eventually become dark surges of their presence in my world, flowing on and on.

In China, the Seniors University is the universities specifically open to the elderly. It is quite divergent from ordinary full-time universities, which are basically for young students. Thus,&#38;nbsp; there is no strict mechanism or examination for the entrance. Elderly people come to the Seniors University to enrich their later life and pursue self-worth. To be specific, approximately&#38;nbsp; 70%&#38;nbsp; students participating in the Seniors University are females. As a matter of fact, women are most likely to heavily take on family responsibilities rather than men in most of cases,&#38;nbsp; which means they can barely spend time with themselves until they no longer need to work or take care of their families in their later years. After they retire with responsibilities for families anymore, part of women take the option to be students in the Senior Universities, such as my mother. My mother signed up for a course at a Seniors University nearby after she retired. when I heard her mention it, I became very interested in it. I started getting to know&#38;nbsp; my mother's campus life and talking to elder ladies with same choice while learning about their motivation.since I would be on their age one day and I am curious instinctively.

I tried to take some pictures when I was gethering with my family.

Growing up, I was always a rebellious kid. Until I graduated and went back to Fuzhou to work and live, I spent more time with my family. I tried to record some daily moments with my family since 2021. As I recorded, I realized that I was also reconciling with my family and previous traumas during this time. If family is a knot that cannot be completely untied, at least photography can make me see more and more clearly how this knot was tied in the first place.
 
Sadly, maybe people are not fully connected by family. After I took these photos with my family, when I looked back at these photos, even though I saw the relationship between my family and me, I saw more that each specific person, even in the family, has a different loneliness that cannot be solved.

Five years ago, during a trip to Singapore, my mother mentioned a granduncle living there. He was my grandfather's cousin and, as she described, bore a striking resemblance to my grandfather, both possessing the characteristic features of Southern Chinese men. During our conversation, my mother expressed her wish for me to meet this granduncle, whom I had never met before. I understood her sentiment—meeting him would bring her some solace after my grandfather's passing. In the years following the deaths of several family members, coupled with the uncertainty of those three challenging years, I developed a profound desire: to document more images of my family, creating a visual archive that would preserve the emotional connections that had been gradually overlooked. I also wished to learn more about the lives of my scattered relatives. So this year, I returned to Singapore, spending a week with my granduncle’s family and capturing photographs of him to enrich our family archive.

During the 1960s, amidst the wave of migration to Southeast Asia, my granduncle, around the age of ten, followed his parents from Fuzhou’s Lubinzhou (now near Luwan Road in Fuzhou’s Jinshan District) to Singapore. At that time, Singapore was still seven years away from full independence. Today, my granduncle has lived in Singapore for over sixty years, sharing a home with his wife and two sons. He and his wife have worked in the restaurant industry for more than two decades. Now, due to his age, the management of the family business has been passed down to his wife and younger son.

When I arrived, it was during Singapore’s National Day celebrations. My granduncle came to the airport to pick me up, and as we drove, the streets were adorned with national flags, while palm trees lined the roads. Upon entering his home, a familiar scent greeted me—a scent that immediately brought me back to memories of my grandfather’s house. It made me ponder: do family members somehow share genetic markers related to scent? This shared recognition, almost animalistic in nature, offered me an overwhelming sense of safety and comfort.

My granduncle lives in Yishun, a northeastern district of Singapore named after Lim Nee Soon, one of the early Chinese pioneers in Singapore. It is an industrial area that once housed British military bases and naval yards, remnants of colonial architecture still visible today. Having grown up in a coastal city, I have always felt a deep connection to the sea. Nearly every place I have lived has been near the ocean, and whenever I catch sight of the waves, I feel an immediate sense of belonging, as though I am inherently tied to my surroundings.

With my granduncle now retired, I had the opportunity to spend more time with him. Every morning at 5 a.m., he would wake up, drive his wife and younger son to the restaurant, and then return home to take me out. Quietly, I would follow him, observing and documenting his daily life. His routine was simple: after dropping off his family, he would meet old friends for tea and conversation, and later have lunch near the restaurant. Occasionally, I would accompany him to reunions with his old schoolmates. Their conversations mirrored those of elderly people back home—discussing family, health, children, and personal hobbies. Running a restaurant is laborious, with the shop closing at 9 p.m. After dinner, my granduncle would take a brief nap before returning to the restaurant to pick up his wife and son. The restaurant operates six days a week, and to unwind, both my granduncle and his wife enjoy using their massage chairs at home. In fact, they had purchased two different models to accommodate the needs of the whole family.

Though in his seventies, my granduncle’s driving style is surprisingly swift, almost daring. Each time I got into the car, I had to fasten my seatbelt and hold on tightly to the handlebar, as his speed matched the rapid pace of Singapore’s urban development. I couldn’t help but wonder if he had always been this assertive and energetic in his younger days. Furthermore, he could navigate TikTok, WeChat, and electronic payments with ease, and even engage in casual conversations in English—a testament to Singapore’s multilingual environment. During the first few days, I hardly noticed any signs of aging in him.

However, as our conversations grew more in-depth, I became aware of his declining hearing. Even with a hearing aid, he struggled to grasp the full context of our conversations. When faced with a new mobile app, he would take longer than a younger person to figure it out and sometimes grew frustrated. The elderly tire easily, and despite his fast-paced lifestyle, my granduncle would take frequent naps—sometimes on the living room sofa, sometimes in his massage chair, and occasionally while waiting in the car for his family to finish work.

One evening, as we sat in the car, my granduncle spoke softly, “We used to remember the addresses of our fathers and grandfathers. But now, both my father and grandfather are gone, and those addresses have disappeared with them. I’ve grown used to life in Singapore, having been a citizen here for sixty years. Fuzhou has changed too much. The Fuzhou of today is a foreign world to me. You’re one of the few relatives I still speak to. If you hadn’t come, we might never have met… I’m old now, and my health is failing. I can’t help at the shop anymore. I’m tired… let’s close our eyes and rest. When your aunt and cousin finish work, we’ll go home together.” The scorching heat and noise of the day had faded, and now, under the twilight, the world felt remarkably quiet. As my granduncle rested, I caught a glimpse of his face illuminated by the soft blue light of the evening—a mixture of peace and resignation.

On the night of my granduncle’s birthday celebration, I was playing Fuzhou mahjong with my aunts in the living room while my granduncle sat quietly by our side. At one point, I noticed him fall asleep on the couch. Amid the faint buzzing of his hearing aid, I wondered: could he hear us talking? Did he feel lonely, not being able to join in the conversation? Sometimes I think, what does such brief sleep mean for the elderly? Is it simply rest, or is it a gradual disconnection from the world around them? Perhaps aging is not a slow decline but a series of moments of disconnection, each one leading us further away.
